District Court and federal bar announce essay contest on Constitution




High school students in 17 area counties are invited to participate in the annual essay contest sponsored by the U.S. District Court and Chattanooga Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.

This year’s topic is “What does it mean to support and defend the Constitution?”

The contest is open to public, private and home high school students in Bedford, Bledsoe, Bradley, Coffee, Franklin, Grundy, Hamilton, Lincoln, McMinn, Marion, Meigs, Moore, Polk, Rhea, Sequatchie, Warren and Van Buren counties.

The contest is being held in conjunction with the national Federal Bar Association essay contest. The deadline for entry in both contests is March 31. Entries for each contest must be submitted separately.

Prizes in the local contest will be:

First – Apple iPad and a Best Buy gift card

Second – $250

Third – $150

Fourth – $75

Winners in the local contest will be announced no later than May 14. The winners and their parents and teachers will be invited to a reception with members of the selection committee.

The reception will be in-person or virtual, depending on the public health situation at the time.

The winning authors and their essays will be recognized on the court’s webpage and at the annual meeting of the Chattanooga Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
