Playwright William Shakespeare once asked, “What’s in a name?”
The principals of McCarthy, Murphy & Preslar answered, “Everything.”
In an effort to promote its focus on representing individuals with disabilities and Social Security disability claims, McCarthy, Murphy & Preslar has changed its name to DisabilityFirm PC.
The decision to rename and rebrand comes after a year of growth in 2024 and a continued expansion of its reach across the U.S.
The firm that has become DisabilityFirm PC opened its doors more than 30 years ago, while a merger in 2009 produced McCarthy, Murphy & Preslar. That year, most of the firm’s business came from referrals from other law firms or by word-of-mouth.
The ability to conduct hearings through a video link spurred the expansion that’s driving DisabilityFirm PC’s new branding. Before 2020, most Social Security court appearances were made in person; today, clients locate firms online.
DisabilityFirm PC now utilizes secure video links to conduct more than 95% of its hearings.
Firm president Peter Murphy says their previous name was not an easy sell.
“McCarthy, Murphy & Preslar has always had a strong reputation but our names were difficult to remember when referring us to someone or for a person to recall when searching for a firm online. DisabilityFirm is a much easier way for clients to find us.”
The firm lifted its new name from its website (disabilityfirm.net) and email address (disabilityfirm.us), both of which it’s used for many years.
“The name selection was simple and maintains continuity,” Murphy adds. “It made less and less sense to go by the name we used in 2009 given the exponential growth of our geographic reach.”
DisabilityFirm PC is based in Chattanooga and currently represents clients in 14 states.
